Roses History
The original War of the Roses took place from 1455-1485 between the rival houses of York and Lancaster. The name is based on the badges associated with the two royal houses, the White Rose of York and the Red Rose of Lancaster. The Wars of the Roses in the 15th century were eventually won by the house of Lancaster, but centuries on York and Lancaster continue to battle it out in a prestigious sporting competition between the two Universities.
The Roses competition began back in 1965 when the Vice-Chancellors of their respective institutions decided to put on a boat race between the crew of Lancaster and York. The rivalry was fierce and although York won the very first boat race, the competition has now evolved into a much bigger event with over 30 different sports, over 100 matches and over 1500 competitors and both sides continue to pursue victory.
This year is the 47th year of the competition and York are hosting the prestigious tournament. The competition has been very close over the years with the score currently being 23 wins to York and 22 wins to Lancaster. Until last year, York had emerged champions in the previous 3 years. But in 2010, Lancaster brought the trophy back to its rightful home after beating York by an impressive 52 points. Although, there have only been 8 away victories throughout the whole competition, demonstrating just how strong the home advantage is, Lancaster are prepared for the challenge ahead.
The Roses competition has continued to expand over the years and aims to involve a large variety of students, not just those involved in the sports. There are a number of volunteers that contribute to various aspects of the tournament ranging from providing media coverage to stewarding the events. There are many more students from societies now involved, adding more events to the schedule or performing in the closing ceremony.
The Roses competition is the highlight of the year for many students, sporty or not, and the event always has great passion and spirit from both sides.
No doubt this year will be no different. So get stuck in and see the historic rivalry resurrected!
