Roses History

The annual sporting battle between the universities of York and Lancaster has been taking place every year since 1965. The first event took place follwing the acceptance by Lord James of Rusholme, then Vice-Chancellor of the University of York, of a challenge set down by Sir Charles Carter, his counterpart accross the border at Lancaster University.

The first year saw York row to victory - the only event taking place being a boat race - and taking home the very first Carter-James trophy. York have since won the event 20 times and Lancaster have acchieved 21 victories bringing the totals to 21 - 21 respectivly. Only once, in 1974, has the event ended in a draw.
